Melissa Calhoun, Ph.D.
Description:
My clinical practice focuses on working with adults who experience a wide range of difficulties, including mood and anxiety disorders, relationship challenges, personal difficulties (e.g., self-esteem, substance use), and common life stressors (e.g., grief, loss, work-related).
I have a particular interest in helping clients learn to better manage and cope with acute and chronic health conditions, such as chronic pain, sleep disorders, respiratory conditions, and infectious diseases (HIV, Hepatitis C). I also work with adults who are adjusting to disability as a result of motor-vehicle accidents and work-related injuries.
In psychotherapy, my aim is to provide a safe place for clients to explore their personal histories, to deepen their understanding of themselves, to enhance areas of personal strength, and to learn skills that will assist them in making positive changes in their lives. I work collaboratively with each client to set treatment goals that are meaningful, achievable, and focused on his/her needs. My approach to psychotherapy is integrative and draws from different therapeutic orientations, including cognitive-behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing, interpersonal therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy. Thus, treatment is client-centred and adjusted as needed to help clients reach their individual treatment goals.
