Dr. Karim Punja is an Ophthalmic Surgeon sub-specialized in Orbit & Oculofacial Plastic Surgery practicing in Calgary for almost 15 years. Along with his associates, Dr. Punja’s office provides care to a large catchment of Canadians from Calgary, Southern Alberta, Western Saskatchewan and Eastern British Columbia.
Dr. Punja’s expanding practice and office is a center of excellence providing high quality care congruent with evidence-based medicine that is patient centered. As a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Calgary, and as the Program Director of the Orbit & Oculofacial Plastic Surgery Fellowship Program, he is a strong advocate for education. Education and teaching are an integral part of an advanced patient care model with learners at all levels: high school students, medical students, residents, postgraduate ophthalmologists (Fellows), and research assistants. Office space will be allotted for research and academia.
A native Calgarian, he received his undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta and his medical degree at Queen’s University. He completed a medical internship followed by a residency in Ophthalmology at Queen’s University. Dr. Punja completed additional years of fellowship training in Ocular Pathology at the University of Ottawa Eye Institute as well as an academic fellowship in Ophthalmic Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of California, San Diego.
Dr. Punja is certified by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, the American Board of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS).
As a research investigator, Dr. Punja has authored numerous academic articles, book chapters, as well as received research awards from Queen’s University and the University of Ottawa. As an internationally known expert in the field of Oculofacial Plastic Surgery, he is often called upon to lecture and make presentations. Further to these contributions, he is an active participant in training fellow physicians. Dr. Punja earned the distinction as a Paul Kayser International Fellow in 2002 and in 2004 he was honored with Teaching Awards at the University of California, San Diego and the University of Calgary.
